On this 7-Day Desert and Coast Self-Drive Safari, you will explore some of the best places in and around the Namib Desert. The route takes you to the Kalahari, Sossusvlei, and Swakopmund.
It is a great tour for a quick but meaningful break from daily life.
Day 1: Hosea Kutako International Airport to Kalahari
You will be welcomed to Namibia by our representative, who will give you a welcome pack and explain your safari in detail. They will walk you through the car rental process and take you to collect your vehicle. The rental company will go over the vehicle procedures with you.
After picking up your vehicle, you will begin your journey to the Kalahari, a region known for its wide open spaces and interesting wildlife.
Spend your first day enjoying a walk through nature. You may see animals such as cheetahs while exploring the dry land. You can also take part in a guided Bushmen walk, where you will learn about the San people and see some of their traditional skills.
Day 2: Namib Naukluft Park (Sossusvlei)
After breakfast, you will drive from the Kalahari to Sossusvlei. This area has some of the tallest sand dunes and wide-open desert views.
You will arrive at Hoodia Desert Lodge, a peaceful and comfortable place to stay. Relax on your private veranda and enjoy the quiet desert surroundings.
In the afternoon, you can join a nature drive offered by the lodge (at an extra cost).
Day 3: Namib Naukluft Park (Sossusvlei)
Today begins with an early start. You can drive yourself or go with a guide from the lodge (at an extra cost) to explore Namib Naukluft Park. Try to catch the sunrise as it lights up the dunes in shades of gold and red.
You can climb Big Daddy or Dune 45 to enjoy the views from the top. Visit Deadvlei, a dry white pan with old trees standing on the cracked ground. On your way back, you can stop at Sesriem Canyon. The rest of the day is free for you to relax.
Days 4–5: Namib Naukluft Park to the Coast
After breakfast, you will continue your self-drive journey to the coastal town of Swakopmund. These two days will be full of beachside charm and different activities.
You will stay at Atlantic Garden Boutique Hotel, a modern and comfortable place near the coast.
Swakopmund has a mix of German colonial buildings and ocean views. There are many things to do, like boat trips to see dolphins and seals, kayaking, deep-sea fishing, or a Sandwich Harbour tour. If you enjoy adventure, you can try sandboarding on the nearby dunes or quad biking.
Day 6: Coast to Erongo Mountain Area
After breakfast, you can choose to take part in another activity or explore the town a little more before leaving for Hohenstein Lodge. This lodge is at the base of the highest peak in the Erongo Mountains.
In the evening, you can enjoy the sunset lighting up the mountains in red. From here, you can see as far as Spitzkoppe, a big rocky mountain rising above the land. The lodge is a good place to start short trips around the area, including day trips to Spitzkoppe.
Day 7: Departure
After your last night at Hohenstein Lodge, you will drive to Windhoek in time for your flight. One of our team members will meet you in Windhoek or at the airport to help return your vehicle.
