Getting to Bwindi & Mgahinga

Travel by road from Kampala or Entebbe through Masaka and Mbarara to Kisoro or Kabale takes about eight to ten hours.

Travel by road from Kigali in Rwanda through the Katuna or Chanika border takes about three to four hours.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

In Rwanda, mountain gorillas live in Volcanoes National Park. The park is part of the Virunga Conservation Area and is located in Ruhengeri in northwestern Rwanda. Volcanoes National Park covers about 160 square kilometers of rainforest and supports a good number of mountain gorillas.

Accessing Volcanoes National Park

Kahuzi-Biega National Park is located about 40 kilometers from Bukavu and is the best place to see Eastern Lowland gorillas. The park covers about 6,000 square kilometers and is named after Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega. There are about 250 Eastern Lowland gorillas in five habituated groups. Packing for a Gorilla Trekking Safari

Proper packing is very important for a successful gorilla trekking safari. Visitors should carry long trousers to protect their legs from insects and plants. A rain jacket helps protect against sudden rain showers. Long sleeved safari shirts provide extra protection.

Visitors should carry a camera without flash because flash photography is not allowed near gorillas. Waterproof hiking boots are needed for walking on forest trails. A waterproof backpack helps protect personal items from rain.

Other important items include insect repellent, bottled drinking water, a sun hat, a first aid kit, extra camera batteries, gardening gloves for holding plants during the trek, sunscreen, and personal toiletries.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Africa

Gorilla trekking in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo can be done throughout the year. The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are considered the best times for trekking. During these months, forest trails are easier to walk on and there is less rainfall.

Gorilla trekking is also possible during the rainy seasons from March to May and October to November. However, trails can be muddy and more difficult to walk through. Some visitors still choose to travel during the rainy seasons because the forests are fresh and permits may be easier to find.
