This 4-Day Nyungwe Forest Chimpanzee and Monkey Trekking Tour gives you a good chance to observe chimpanzees in their natural home.

It is a complete primate experience that includes chimpanzee tracking and a canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park, located in the Southern Province of Rwanda.

Nyungwe Forest covers about 1,000 square kilometers and can be reached by a 5 to 6-hour drive from Kigali.

The park is home to 13 types of primates, including about 500 chimpanzees, silver monkeys, vervet monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys.

Detailed 4-Day Nyungwe Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda

You will be welcomed by your guide either at Kigali Airport or after breakfast at your hotel in Kigali. The guide will explain your chimpanzee safari plan, then you will start the 5 to 6-hour drive to Nyungwe Forest.

On the way, stop at Nyanza to visit the King’s Palace and the Ethnographic Museum in Butare. After lunch, continue the journey and later check in at your lodge in Nyungwe Forest.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk

Start the day early with a cup of tea or coffee. Then gather at Uwinka trail for a briefing about chimpanzee trekking rules. The walk to find chimpanzees begins at 8:00 am, led by a park guide.

The trek can take between 2 to 4 hours. Once you find the chimpanzees, you are allowed one hour to watch them before walking back for lunch.

In the afternoon, enjoy a canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest, which takes about 2 to 3 hours. This walk follows the Igishigishigi Trail and includes a 200-meter-long bridge suspended 60 meters above the ground.

During this walk, you may see some of the forest’s primates, butterflies, and birds.

Day 3: Gisakura Day Walk & Visit Kitabi Village

After breakfast, take a walk through Gisakura Tea Estates to learn about tea farming in Rwanda. The walk goes toward Lake Kivu, and on the way, you can visit Kitabi Village or Banda Community.

Learn how tea is grown, processed, and prepared for drinking. After the walk, return to the lodge and enjoy some free time to relax and reflect on your experiences in Nyungwe Forest.

Day 4: Return to Kigali & City Tour

After breakfast, check out of the lodge and begin the 6-hour drive back to Kigali. When you arrive, go on a short city tour. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, explore craft shops, and see some cultural or historical sites and local markets.

Your driver will then take you to the airport or your hotel in Kigali. This marks the end of your 4-day chimpanzee trekking tour in Nyungwe Forest.
