Detailed 14 Days Rwanda Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & transfer to a hotel in Kigali
Arrive at Kanombe International Airport and drive to a hotel in Kigali City for lunch, dinner, and overnight stay.
Day 2: Drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park for chimpanzee trekking
After breakfast, drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park through the hills and farmland. Stop at Nyanza Royal Palace to learn about Rwanda’s history and culture.
Visit the Rwesero Cultural Museum, then continue to Butare Town for lunch. Arrive at the park visitor center in the afternoon. Relax, have dinner, and stay overnight at the lodge.
Day 3: Chimpanzee trekking & canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest
After an early breakfast, go chimpanzee trekking with your packed lunch and water. The trek lasts 1 to 4 hours. Besides chimpanzees, you may see vervet monkeys, Angolan colobus monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys, plus many birds.
Have lunch in the forest and return to the lodge to rest. In the afternoon, go for a guided canopy walk along a bridge through the tall trees. Look for birds, monkeys, and other forest life.
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Guided forest hike to see waterfalls, birds & mammals
Spend the morning hiking one of the forest trails to see trees, birds like the Rwenzori turaco and great blue turaco, monkeys, waterfalls, and wetlands.
Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, walk through the nearby Gisakura tea estate to learn about tea growing and processing.
Taste some tea before returning to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Transfer to Kibuye on Lake Kivu for a boat ride
After breakfast, drive to Kibuye on the shores of Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s largest lake. Take a boat ride to the islands, where you can see birds, otters, and visit L’Esperance Orphanage in Kigarama Village. This visit to a charity project is a rewarding part of the safari. Return to the lodge by the lake for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: Drive to Gisenyi via Congo-Nile Trail & community visits
Drive to Gisenyi, another relaxing town on Lake Kivu. On the way, explore the Congo-Nile Trail and stop at community projects. Meet local artisans involved in honey production and basket weaving, where you can buy souvenirs. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: Guided tour of Buhanga Eco-Park
After breakfast with packed lunch and luggage, visit Buhanga Eco-Park, a sacred forest known for its cultural and natural importance. Walk along stone trails under tall trees.
See birds, butterflies, and cultural sites like the herb-picking ditch, the dark cave where kings were carried, and the royal podium where kings received blessings.
After this special visit, drive to Red Rocks for dinner and homestay.
Day 8: Drive to Volcanoes National Park, home of mountain gorillas
Enjoy breakfast at the homestay, then transfer to Volcanoes National Park. Stop for lunch and visit Gorilla Guardian Village to learn about Rwandan culture and traditions. Continue to your lodge near the park for dinner and overnight.
Day 9: Mountain gorilla trekking & canoe ride on Twin Lakes
After breakfast and registration, start the gorilla trek with armed rangers. Trek through thick forest and rough terrain to find the gorillas. Spend one hour watching their daily life.
The trek lasts 2 to 6 hours. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, take a boat ride on Twin Lakes Bulera and Ruhondo. Enjoy the hills, islands, and birds around the lakes.
Day 10: Golden monkey tracking & tour of Musanze Caves
After breakfast, meet at the park headquarters for briefing before tracking golden monkeys in the bamboo forest. This trek takes 2 to 3 hours. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, visit Musanze Caves, which stretch 2 kilometers underground. Explore the caves using walkways and stairs. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 11: Drive to Akagera National Park
After breakfast, visit Gisozi Genocide Memorial Site before arriving at Akagera National Park in the afternoon. Have lunch, rest, then enjoy dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 12: Game drive on Northern Circuit and boat ride on Lake Ihema
After breakfast, go on a game drive through the northern part of Akagera. Look for animals like rhinos, elephants, leopards, buffaloes, lions, giraffes, hippos, and many others. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, take a boat ride on Lake Ihema to see hippos and crocodiles. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 13: Guided bush walks & return to Kigali
After breakfast, go on a guided nature walk to see birds and monkeys. Return to the lodge for lunch, then drive back to Kigali City. Check in to a hotel.
Day 14: City tour & departure
After breakfast, visit Kigali’s main tourist sites, then transfer to the airport for your flight home or other destination.
