Essential Ngorongoro Conservation Area Visitor Guidelines and Regulations

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority has implemented various rules and regulations to guide tourists visiting the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, ensuring the proper conservation and preservation of the environment, wildlife species, and the well-being of visitors while enjoying their safari. Travelers are kindly requested to adhere to these guidelines to maintain the scenic beauty and wildlife species of the area. These regulations include:

  • The opening and closing times of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gates, except for the Seneto Descent Gate, which closes at 1600 hours, are 0600 hours and 1800 hours, respectively. Travelers should manage their time accordingly.
  • Ngorongoro Crater access roads must be used as follows: Seneto for descent only, Lerai for ascent only, and Lemala (Sopa) Road for both descent and ascent. Travelers should be aware of occasional descending safari vehicles.
  • Off-track driving is strictly prohibited in the Ngorongoro Crater area. Safari vehicle drivers must stay on authorized roads and tracks.
  • The speed limit is 25 km per hour to ensure safe driving and prevent accidents within the Ngorongoro area.
  • Safari vehicles in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area must be equipped with standard safari equipment, including a heavy-duty jack, chain or rope, shovel or hoe, along with an axe or panga if they are to be allowed in the area.
  • More than five safari vehicles are not allowed near animal species, as it can disrupt their natural behaviors.
  • All visitors to Ngorongoro Crater and Olduvai Gorge must be accompanied by a licensed guide.
  • Uprooting, removing, or damaging standing vegetation is strictly prohibited, as it contributes to the area’s beautiful scenery.
  • Collection or removal of any animal products, rocks, plants, seeds, bird nests, live animals, insects, birds, or reptiles is not allowed, as they belong to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority.
  • Lighting or starting fires in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is prohibited, as it can lead to bushfires and harm wildlife.
  • Campfires are only allowed in designated areas and must be completely extinguished after use.
  • Smoking is not allowed in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area unless in designated areas, and cigarette butts must be properly disposed of.
  • Littering is prohibited in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and visitors should carry their rubbish, including food wrappers, until they reach a designated rubbish can in the area.
  • Avoid removing or disturbing geological or archaeological deposits at Olduvai Gorge; they should be left undisturbed.
  • Pets are not allowed in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
  • Loud noise from radios, music players, honking, or loud conversations is not permitted in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, as it can disturb wild animals.
  • Do not make hand signals or mimic animals. If an animal exhibits avoidance behavior or is engaged in hunting, feeding, or nursing activities, do not block its path.
