List of Tanzania land border posts
Tanzania shares borders with eight countries majorly to facilitate trade , tourism and regional integration.
Before thinking about using any of the borders it’s advisable to check the visa rules and required permits for international travelers whereas for citizens of the East African community they may require a certificate of identity.

- Tanzania – Kenya borders
Namanga Border
This border is located on the Arusha – Nairobi highway about 120km from Arusha amd 160km from Nairobi. It is the busiest and most efficient crossing between Tanzania and Kenya . Various people use this border including business travelers, touriats and truckers among others .
Holili- Taveta border
This border is found near Mount Kilimanjaro about 90km from Moshi Tanzania . It’s the main route for tourists visiting Tsavo West National Park . The border is less congested than Namanga therefore faster transportation between the two countries.
Horohoro- Lunga Lunga border
This border is located on the coastal route near Pangani Tanzania and Mombasa Kenya . The border is mostly used by local fishermen and small scale traders .
- Tanzania – Uganda Border
Mutukula border
This is the only border available between Uganda and Tanzania . The border is located near Bukoba Tanzania and Masaka Uganda . It’s the main land crossing between Uganda and Tanzania and connects lake Victoria ferry routes .
- Tanzania – Rwanda Border
Rusumo Falls border
The border is located between Ngara Tanzania and Kigali Rwanda . It’s the busiest route for travelers between the two countries . A New Rusumo Bridge was constructed in 2022 to improve crossing efficiency. Mostly used by buses , private vehicles , trucks from Dar es Salaam or Arusha to Kigali .
- Tanzania -Burundi border
Kobero – Mabanda border
The border is located near Ngara Tanzania to Bujumbura Burundi . It’s the main crossing for trade and refugees for Burundi . There is usually heavy traffic due to Burundi ‘s reliance on Dar es Salaam port .
- Tanzania – Democratic Republic of Congo
Kabanga – Uvira border
The border is located near Kigoma Tanzania and South Kivu DRC . Mostly used by Traders , miners and Non governmental organizations.
DRC visa is required in advance to enter the country .
- Tanzania – Zambia border
Tunduma- Nakonde border
The border is located between Mbeya Tanzania and Lusaka Zambia . This border is the busiest southern route for SADC trade . Offers 24 hour operation for trucks .
- Tanzania -Malawi border
Kasumulu- Songwe Border
This is the main crossing between the two countries. It is located between Mbeya Tanzania and Lilongwe Malawi The border is well organized but slow due to custom checks .
- Tanzania – Mozambique Border .
Kilambo- Mocimboa Da Paria
This border mostly used by locals . Located in the northern coastal route of Mozambique.
