Among the most remarkable features of Tanzania are lakes playing a crucial role in the economy , culture and tourism .

These lakes all vary in size and origin and offer unique ecosystems .

 

Among the most famous lakes in the country is lake Victoria the second largest fresh water lake in the world and is shared by three countries ie Uganda , Kenya and Tanzania .  The lake was formed due to the warping and up lift of the land . The lake is important in providing water , fish and transportation to the surrounding communities. The lake faces challenges like pollution and overfishing threatening the lake’s biodiversity.

 

Lake Tangayika is another amazing lake in Tanzania, known as the second deepest lake in the world and the longest fresh water lake .

The lake was formed due to the massive lifting of the earths crust in the East African rift valley . The lake stretches up to four countries that is Tanzania , Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Burundi . The lake has crystal clear waters and over 500 fish species found no where else in the world . The lake is used as a source of food and transportation route by the local communities nearby .

 

Lake Nyasa also called lake Malawi in Malawi is found in the southwestern region of Tanzania . In Mozambique the lake is known as Lago Niassa. This lake is an African Great Lake and the southernmost lake in the East African rift valley shared between three countries .

The lake has clear waters and sandy beaches which make it a popular destination for tourists seeking relaxation and water activities.

 

In northern Tanzania also lie another awe inspiring lake , lake Natron known for its alkalinity and red hue caused by salt loving organisms. Lake Natron covers an area of about 1040 sq km and its waters are caustic . It’s capable of causing burns and irritations to human skin and eyes . The lake is also subject to extreme temperatures above 100°F.

The lake offers breeding grounds for lesser flamingoes , attracting thousands of these birds each year .

 

Another notable Tanzanian lake is lake Manyara located at the base of the great rift valley . The lake is also called lake Moya amimg the Iraqw people and located in Moduli District of Arusha region . Lake Manyara is an alkaline lake or soda lake formed by the rift valley’s tectonic activity. Lake Manyara National park is a home to various tree climbing lions , flamingoes and diverse birdlife .

 

The lakes of Tanzania are not only natural wonders but also lifelines to the local communities therefore conservation efforts are on going to protect them .

 

By and large , The lakes are a testament to the country’s natural heritage.
