Detailed 7 Days Rwanda Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Rwanda – Kigali International Airport
Welcome to Rwanda. On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by your private driver guide. If time allows, take a short city tour to learn about Rwanda’s history before and after colonization, and about the Genocide.
Later, you will be dropped off at a hotel for refreshment, dinner, and overnight stay.
Day 2: Kigali City – Akagera National Park
After breakfast at your hotel, meet your driver guide and start the journey to the Eastern Province of Rwanda. You will stop at local community projects to learn about the traditional cultures of Rwanda.
Arrive at your lodge in Akagera for lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat ride on Lake Ihema. You will see birds around the wetlands, many hippos, and Nile crocodiles near the lake’s edge.
Day 3: Game drive in Akagera – Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
After early breakfast, go for a game drive in Akagera National Park. Drive through the open plains, acacia woods, rocky hills, and forested areas. You may see elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, antelopes, zebras, monkeys, and many other animals.
Later, start the journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park. You will arrive in the evening for dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 4: Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe – Drive to Lake Kivu
After early breakfast, go to the park headquarters for briefing and registration for chimpanzee trekking. With a ranger and other trekkers, enter the forest to search for the habituated chimpanzees. The trek can take 1 to 3 hours.
Bring your permit, passport, camera, rain jacket, backpack, and wear the right clothes. Once you find the chimpanzees, you will spend one hour watching them feed, play, rest, and care for their young ones. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and later drive to Lake Kivu.
Day 5: Lake Kivu – Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, take a boat ride on Lake Kivu and visit some of its islands. One special stop is Coffee Island, where you will learn how Rwandan coffee is grown, picked, processed, and packed.
You will also enjoy a cup of fresh local coffee. After the tour, drive to Volcanoes National Park.
Day 6: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Have early breakfast at your lodge and drive to the park headquarters. On arrival, you will register and attend a briefing. You will be assigned a gorilla group based on your age, fitness, and interest.
Only 8 people are allowed to trek each group per day, with about 80 permits available daily.
Follow an armed ranger who will lead you to the gorilla group. The trek takes 1 to 5 hours, depending on where the gorillas are. Once found, you will spend one hour watching them.
After the trek, return to the lodge for a hot meal and rest. In the evening, visit the Gorilla Guardian Village near the park. You will learn about the traditional and modern lifestyle of Rwandan people.
Day 7: Drive from Volcanoes to Kigali City
After breakfast, take a scenic drive from Volcanoes National Park through farms and plantations of tea, coffee, and bananas. On arrival in Kigali City, you will be dropped off at your hotel or at the airport for your flight.
