Uganda has two parks where this can happen: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both are in the far southwest of Uganda, about 8 to 10 hours by road from Kampala. The long drive is worth every minute.
Luxury Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
Bwindi has over 459 mountain gorillas, nearly half of all the mountain gorillas in the world. This makes it one of the top places for luxury gorilla trekking in Africa. It lies in southwestern Uganda and spreads across Kabale, Kisoro, and Kanungu districts near the border with DR Congo.
Bwindi became a national park in 1991 and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Its rain-forest, known as the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, was named by CNN Travel as one of the world’s most beautiful places. It is a special location to visit during a luxury gorilla trek.
All treks in Bwindi start in one of four areas of the park, called sectors. These are Nkuringo and Rushaga in the south, Buhoma in the north, and Ruhija in the east. A briefing on trekking rules starts at 7:00 am, and the actual trek begins at 8:00 am. During this time, you are also assigned to a gorilla group.
Each of Bwindi’s 20 plus gorilla families is visited by only 8 people each day. In Ruhija, the groups are Oruzogo, Mukiza, Bitukura, and Kyaguriro. In Buhoma, they include Katwe, Habinyanja, Mubare, and Rushegura. Nkuringo has the Christmas, Bushaho, and Nkuringo families. Rushaga has Busingye, Mishaya, Bikingi, Kutu, Rwigi, Bweza, Kahungye, Nshongi, and Mucunguzi.
Luxury Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is perfect for travelers who prefer smaller crowds. It is found in Kisoro District, in Uganda’s far southwest. The park is home to just one gorilla group, Nyakagezi, which only allows 8 visitors per day.

Booking Gorilla Permits for Uganda
There are two ways to book a permit for luxury gorilla trekking in Uganda. The easiest is to go through a trusted tour company like ours, which specializes in luxury trips. You can also book directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority, based in Kamwokya, Kampala.
Permits cost USD 800 for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. Book your permit at least 4 months before your trek date.
You can also choose a mountain gorilla habituation experience, available only in Bwindi. This lets you spend four hours with a gorilla group. A habituation permit costs USD 1500.
How to Get to Bwindi & Mgahinga
There are several ways to reach Bwindi and Mgahinga parks. If starting from Kampala, you’ll travel for about 8 to 10 hours through Masaka and Mbarara to reach Kabale or Kisoro. A 4WD vehicle is best for this trip.
You can also travel from Kigali, Rwanda. It takes about 3 to 5 hours to cross the border at Katuna (for Bwindi) or Chanika (for Mgahinga). For a shorter trip, you can fly from Entebbe or Kajjansi to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips. From there, it’s just a short drive to the parks.
Luxury Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda
Rwanda is a small landlocked country with rare animals like mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking is the main wildlife activity offered to tourists visiting Rwanda, along with many other nature experiences. Most visitors come to see mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. This is the only place in Rwanda where you can enjoy a luxury gorilla trekking experience.
Volcanoes National Park is a small safari park in Northwestern Rwanda, in the Ruhengeri region. It is easy to reach, taking 2 to 3 hours by car from Kigali or 3 to 5 hours from Bwindi or Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks in Uganda. Compared to Uganda, this park is much closer to the city.
The park covers 160 square kilometers and is mostly made up of bamboo forest. It is home to about 30% of the 1,063 remaining mountain gorillas and has 10 habituated gorilla groups. The groups you might visit on a luxury trek include Hirwa, Bwenge, Susa B (Karisimbi), Umubano, Amahoro, Agashya, Sabyinyo, Kwitonda, Susa A, and Ugenda.
Luxury gorilla trekking in this park can be combined with other tours like big game safaris in Akagera National Park, golden monkey tracking in Volcanoes, or chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest or Gishwati-Mukura National Parks.
Every luxury gorilla trek in Rwanda starts with a short briefing at the Kinigi office. You will be told how to behave around gorillas and assigned a group to visit. The trek begins at 8:00 am. Gorilla trekking can take between 2 to 6 hours depending on your speed and the terrain. When you find the gorillas, you will be allowed to spend 1 hour with them. During this time, your guide will help you take pictures and explain the gorillas’ behavior and movements.
Gorilla Permits in Rwanda
If you want to go on a luxury gorilla trek in Rwanda, you need a gorilla permit. It costs 1,500 US dollars per person. This permit allows you to visit one gorilla group and spend one hour with them in the wild.
It is important to book your permit early—at least 2 to 4 months before your trek. You can book through our reservation team or directly from the Rwanda Development Board.
Luxury Gorilla Trekking in D.R. Congo
Luxury gorilla trekking in Congo lets you see both mountain gorillas and Eastern Lowland gorillas in the wild. You can visit Virunga National Park to see mountain gorillas and Kahuzi-Biega National Park to see Eastern Lowland gorillas.
Luxury Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park
In Virunga, luxury gorilla trekking involves visiting mountain gorillas. This is the oldest national park in Africa, created in 1925. It covers 7,800 square kilometers and is home to some of the remaining mountain gorillas. There are 8 habituated gorilla groups: Rugendo, Bageni, Lulengo, Humba, Nyakamwe, Kabirizi, Munyaga, and Mapuwa.
The trek begins with a briefing at Bukima Ranger Post. You will be assigned a group and begin your walk at 8:00 am. The whole activity takes 2 to 6 hours, including one hour of time with the gorillas to take photos and learn about their behavior.
Luxury Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park
In Kahuzi-Biega, you will track Eastern Lowland gorillas. The park is near Bukavu town in Eastern Congo. It is large, covering 6,000 square kilometers. There are 5 habituated groups you might visit: Bonnani, Nganwa, Chimanuka, Mugahuka, and Moungwe.
Booking Gorilla Permits for Virunga and Kahuzi-Biega
You need a gorilla permit for both parks. Each permit costs 450 US dollars per person. You can get them through a tour operator or directly from the park authorities.
Getting to Virunga and Kahuzi-Biega
You can get to Virunga by road or air. By road, travel from Kisoro in Uganda through the Bunagana border. From there, it’s a 30-minute drive to Bukima. You can also drive from Kigali through Gisenyi, which takes about 4 hours to reach Goma and then access Virunga.
By air, you can fly from Kigali to Goma. Flights are available on Turkish Airlines, Kenya Airways, RwandAir, and others.
To reach Kahuzi-Biega, drive 40 km from Bukavu town or fly to Miti or Kavumu Airport in Congo. From there, go to Tschivanga, the park’s visitor center. You can also take a boat from Goma to Bukavu via Idjwi Island on Lake Kivu.

Best Time for Luxury Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking is possible all year round in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. The best time is during the dry season. There are two dry periods: the long dry season from June to September and the short one from December to February.
During these months, demand for gorilla permits is high, so book your permit 2 to 4 months early.
The rainy seasons are from March to April and from October to November. These are low seasons, with more budget travelers.
