Tribes of Tanzania
Having about 120 ethnic groups Tanzania stands as Africa’s culturally richest nation .
All groups have distinctive traditions , languages and ways of life .
The Sukuma people stand as Tanzania ‘s largest tribe approximately 16% of the population. These people live in the north west region of the country south of lake Victoria. These are referred to as the cow boys because they own large herds of cows , sheep and goats thus live a nomadic life . They speak the Sukuma language together with other languages that is English and Swahili .
The Masai is another famous tribe in Tanzania and also internationally recognized. They are a Nilotic ethnic group native to Tanzania and neighboring Kenya . They are known for their colorful customs and eye catching red clothing called Shuka. They are semi nomadic indigenous people who live in northern Tanzania although also practice agriculture.
The Chagga tribe is the third largest tribe in Tanzania living on the base of Mount Kilimanjaro . The chagga tribe was fully separated into autonomous chiefdoms that were originally controlled by mangis and belonged to distinct clans . The chagga are the most richest and well organized people in Tanzania . They practice agriculture because of the fertile soils around Mount Kilimanjaro.
Another tribe is the Gogo a Bantu ethnic group residing in central Tanzania around the Dodoma region . They speak a language called cigogo . The gogo preserve ancient traditions of cattle rearing and rainmaking ceremonies .
More to that are the Nyamwezi people living in western Tanzania and are the second largest in the region after sukuma. Their name Nyamwezi means the people of the moon .
They were the most powerful people in the ancient times and opposed the Arabs in the 1880s .
The Datooga people is another tribe of Tanzania from the karatu district of the Arusha region. They are also called the Mang’ati in Swahili . They live a nomadic lifestyle in the arid terrains of Tanzania .
The Makonde tribe is another tribe living in southern Tanzania in Mtwara region . They originated from Mozambique and are famous for their wood carving skills .
Irawq is also a tribe in Tanzania living in the volcanic highlands of northern region of the country . They have maintained their Cushitic language and have strong background in farming and agriculture. Today they are about 350,000 people living in North central Tanzania in the Arusha province and lake Manyara region .
