This five-day guided climb up Mount Toubkal takes place in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. We hike through different landscapes, from green valleys to rocky paths.
The route takes us through mountain passes, past Berber villages, and up to the highest point at 4,167 meters on Mount Toubkal.
Your trip begins with a pickup from your hotel in Marrakech. From there, we drive into the High Atlas Mountains, which takes about one and a half hours.
Our local team will meet you, and we will begin the hike toward the village of Tahliouine, crossing the Tizi n’Tacht Pass. This day involves about five hours of walking. We stay overnight in a lodge.
On the second day, we leave Azzaden Valley after an early breakfast. We walk uphill through the Tizi n’Touti Pass to Dkent Village. After two hours of walking, we stop by a stream for lunch.
We then continue walking to the village where we spend the night in a lodge. This is about a six-hour hike.
On the third day, we walk from Dkent to Tizi Oussem Village after breakfast. We cross the Tizi n’Tegdalt Pass and take a lunch break by a river. After lunch, we walk to the village where we stay overnight. This is also about a six-hour hike.
On the fourth day, we leave Tizi Oussem and walk uphill to the Tizi n’Aguelzim Pass. We pass by the Azib Tamsoult shelter. This is a long and harder walk, about six to seven hours. We stop for lunch along the way and then descend to the base camp from the pass.
The fifth day is summit day. We start early with breakfast and then begin walking uphill toward the summit. The climb takes about three hours. From the top, you get good views of the Atlas Mountains.
After reaching the summit, we return to the refuge and have lunch. We then follow a different route back down to the Imlil Valley.
This day involves about ten hours of walking. After arriving in Imlil, we drive back to Marrakech.
Day 1: Marrakech – Imi Oughlad – Tizi n’Tachte – Tiziane
We leave Marrakech in the morning and drive south through the Moulay Brahim Gorge and the valleys to reach the foothills of the western High Atlas Mountains.
We arrive at the trailhead in Imi Oughlad (1,450 m), where we see the high peaks like Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m), Aglzim (3,650 m), and Aksoual (3,847 m). We meet the Berber muleteers here.
We begin a two-hour hike on switchback mule paths, passing cornfields, pine, and juniper trees.
We reach Tizi n’Tachte at 2,000 meters, stop to look at the views of the Ait Ouazaden and Ilil Valleys, then continue 30 more minutes to Imi n’Ifri for a picnic.
After lunch, we walk for about two and a half hours on a dirt trail to the red clay village of Tiziane (1,750 m), where we sleep in a local Berber house.
Day 2: Tiziane – Tizi n’Taghrhourte – D’knt
After breakfast, we hike up the Assif n’Ait Ouazaden Valley, passing walnut trees, to reach Tizi n’Taghrhourte (1,995 m). We then follow a flat section to the Assaka Spring.
After about two and a half hours, we stop for a picnic in the quiet area. In the afternoon, we walk along the forest edge and reach the village of D’knt (1,870 m), also known as Agouns n’Assoul. We camp and have dinner here.
Day 3: D’knt – Tizi n’Tagdalte – Tizi Oussem
We walk for three hours through corn and barley fields, walnut groves, and meet herders along the way. After crossing Tizi n’Tagdalte, we go down through juniper trees and stop at a small spring for lunch.
We then walk along upper trails for about three more hours to reach a small river in the Assif n’Ait Ouazaden Valley. From here, we go up to the summer village of Tamsoult, then continue to Tizi Oussem (1,850 m), where we camp.
Day 4: Azib Tamsoult – Tizi Aguelzim – Toubkal Refuge
After breakfast, we take a harder hike east on mule paths up to Tizi Aguelzim (3,550 m). Then we continue southeast for three more hours to the Toubkal Refuge (3,207 m), which is the snowline in spring. We camp and have dinner here.
Day 5: Toubkal Refuge – Summit – Sidi Chamharouch – Imlil – Marrakech
We start with an early breakfast and begin hiking at 6:00 am to reach the summit of Toubkal (4,167 m) after a tough three-hour climb. From the top, you get good views.
We then descend for about two to three hours back to the refuge and have lunch.
After lunch, we follow a path north that goes down through the upper slopes of Assif n’Isouhouanem n’Ouagounss. This trail leads to the Sidi Chamharouch Shrine, located near a waterfall.
This is a holy site with a shrine that non-Muslims cannot enter. It is believed to be from before the Islamic period.
After visiting the site, we walk another two hours downhill to reach the village of Imlil, where many treks begin. From here, we take a taxi back to Marrakech.
