3 Days Djibouti Lakes & Northern Tour – Djibouti was once called French Somaliland (1896–1967) and later the French Territory of the Afars and Issas (1967–1977). The country gained independence from France on 27 June 1977.
The capital, Djibouti City, is built on coral reefs that stretch into the southern mouth of the Gulf. Other important towns include Obock, Tadjourah, Ali Sabieh, Arta, and Dikhil.
Though it may seem small, Djibouti plays an important role in the region. Its capital has a deepwater port that handles traffic from the Indian Ocean and Red Sea and is home to a French naval base.
The city is also a key railway hub connecting to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.
Besides Lake Assal, another major lake in Djibouti is Lake Abbé, located on the southwestern border with Ethiopia. The country has no permanent rivers above ground, but some underground rivers do exist.
This tour lets you explore the white-washed buildings of the old town of Tadjourah and visit two of the country’s best-known lakes.
Day 1: Drive to Lake Abbé
After breakfast, we drive to Lake Abbé, passing through the Grand Bara and Petit Barra deserts. We will stop for lunch in Dikhil before continuing to Lake Abbé.
You will spend the night at the Tourist Camp, which is made up of simple African huts. In the evening, you can enjoy the sunset view over the lake.
Day 2: Sunrise at Lake Abbé & Visit Lake Assal
Wake up early to see the sunrise at Lake Abbé, known for its chimney-like formations. On a walking tour, you may see nomads, flamingos, and hot springs. The geology in this area is very unique.
We will then drive to Lake Assal, the lowest point in Africa. Along the way, we will stop to view Canyon Adaleh and the Goubet area.
At Lake Assal, the large salt field makes it feel like you are walking in an empty land. The water changes color as the sunlight hits it. We will then continue to Tadjourah for an overnight stay.
Day 3: Explore Tadjourah & Return to Djibouti City
Today we will explore the town of Tadjourah, one of the oldest towns in Djibouti. It is known for its white-washed buildings and calm atmosphere.
After the visit, we will return to Djibouti City, where the tour ends.
