2 Days Djibouti Discovery Tour – Djibouti was once known as French Somaliland (1896–1967) and later as the French Territory of the Afars and Issas (1967–1977). The country gained independence from France on June 27, 1977.
The capital, Djibouti City, is built on coral reefs that stretch into the southern entrance of the Gulf. Other main towns include Obock, Tadjoura, Ali Sabieh, Arta, and Dikhil.
Though Djibouti is a coastal country, its importance goes beyond its location. The capital has a modern deep-water port that handles shipping in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea.
It is also home to a French naval base. Djibouti is the railway connection for Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.
Your 2-day tour begins in Djibouti City, with an overnight stay at Camp Abbé. During the tour, you will experience the culture of the Afar people and wake up to beautiful landscapes and wide views.
You will also visit both the highest and the lowest points in the region.
Day 1: Drive Through Deserts to Lake Abbe
In the morning, we will drive to Lake Abbé, passing through the Grand Bara and Petit Bara deserts. We will stop in Dikhil for lunch before arriving at Lake Abbé.
You will spend the night at the Tourist Camp, a simple camp made up of traditional African huts. In the evening, enjoy the view as the sun sets over the strange landscape.
Day 2: Sunrise at Lake Abbe & Visit to Lake Assal
Wake up early to see the sunrise. Then we will drive to Lake Assal, the lowest point in Africa. On the way, we will pass by Canyon Adalah and enjoy views of Goubet. Back at Lake Abbé, take a walk to see the chimney-like rock formations, nomads, flamingos, and hot springs. The geology in this area is very unique.
At Lake Assal, you’ll see a wide salt field that looks like it goes on forever. The color of the water changes depending on how the sun hits the salt. After this, we return to Djibouti City.
You will be dropped off at your hotel if you are staying longer or taken to the airport for your flight back home. Pickup and drop-off can be arranged from either your hotel or the airport.
