4-Day Mount Meru Trekking Safari

In this 4 days Mount Meru trekking safari, you should expect lots of fun and a true test of fitness. As you climb to the peak of the third highest mountain in Tanzania, you will reach a height of 4,566m above the ground. Many hikers see this trek as a great warm-up for the giant “Roof of Africa,” which is the snowcapped Mount Kilimanjaro.

This trip offers a challenging experience. You will walk through thick forests, moorland, small streams, and rocky ridges to reach the summit. Along the way, you will see many beautiful views, such as Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance and the amazing ash cone inside the crater. You will also see many animals like buffaloes, zebras, and special types of antelopes. There are many birds and rare trees to see as well. Mount Meru is located east of Arusha city inside Arusha National Park.

Our driver-guide will pick you up at the start of your journey and drop you off on the last day at the agreed spot.

After you register and listen to a helpful talk with other hikers, you will start your 4 to 5-hour walk to Mariakamba Hut. This hut is 1,500m above the ground.

This first day gives you a chance to see many animals. Look out for zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, and different types of antelopes. You might also see monkeys and many birds. You will have your dinner and sleep at Mariakamba Hut.

Day Two: Mariakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3-4 hours)

Your journey continues after breakfast. You will walk for about 3 to 4 hours to reach Saddle Hut. You will take breaks to help your body get used to the high air because the temperature changes as you go higher.

If you get to the area early and still have energy, you can eat lunch and then climb to the top of Little Meru. From there, you can see great views like the sunset, the snow on Mount Kilimanjaro, and the crater. After that, you will go back to Saddle Hut for dinner and sleep.

Day Three: Saddle Hut to the Peak and Mariakamba Hut (5-6 hours)

On this day, you will leave Saddle Hut very early, usually around 4 am. The walk to the top takes about 4 to 6 hours depending on how fast you walk. You will move through a narrow ridge. If everything goes well, you will be at the summit when the sun rises. You can relax, take photos, and look at Mount Kilimanjaro from far away.

After staying at the top, you will walk down to Mariakamba Hut. You will stop at Saddle Hut for lunch and a short rest. You will end the day with a big meal and a good sleep.

Day Four: Departure

On the final day of the trip, wake up and eat a meal that gives you energy. You will walk down for 2 to 3 hours to Momella Gate. Your driver-guide will be waiting there to take you to Arusha city. You can choose to do a small tour of the city before going to the airport for your flight home.
