Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Pickup to Machame Gate and then to Machame Camp
We hope that this day finds you around the country because the journey starts at daybreak. We begin with a yummy cup of coffee and a brief talk about the destination. We will explain what to expect and respond to all your inquiries to make sure you are ready for the 7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Hike via Machame Route.
Thereafter, you will have a scenic drive to Machame gate for registration. This is followed by another 1 hour drive to the spot where the hike starts. You will walk through a rain forest that is home to unique tree species, rare bird species, and plenty of flowers. The total journey time is about 5 to 6 hours, with a lunch break included. An evening arrival at Machame camp is common as you take your time to enjoy the nature around you.
Day 2: Depart Machame Camp for Shira Camp (4 to 5 hours)
The journey continues today after breakfast. You will walk for approximately 4 to 5 hours through the moorland vegetation to reach Shira camp. This camp sits at a height of 3,839m. The route is very amazing as you encounter a rocky ridge and a stream while turning left to Shira camp. At this point, you will start experiencing a change of temperature. It will feel colder, but it is a change that you can still handle easily. Your dinner and overnight stay will be at Shira camp.
Day 3: Explore the Lava Tower to Barranco Camp (5 to 6 hours)

The environment becomes semi arid as you hike. You will head towards the eastern crest to Kibo peak, then to the southeastern side to the lower tower. This tower is also known as “the Shark’s Tooth” and sits at an elevation of 4,650m. You will have a mouthwatering lunch meal here. You can also choose to explore the tower before connecting to the arrow glacier. Finally, you will move to Barranco camp for a peaceful nap.
Day 4: Depart Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
On this day, you will greet your intestines with a yummy breakfast. This is followed by a 3 to 4 hour hike to Karanga camp, which is at an elevation of 4,034m. To get there, you must tackle the steep edge of the great Barranco wall. While hiking to the top, expect a very exciting day. The crew and hikers exercise patience, bravery, and stamina while crossing the wall. You will also enjoy some of the most captivating sceneries during this part of the trek.
On arrival at Karanga camp, dinner and a nap will come early. This helps you to adjust to the high altitude while waiting for the next challenging day. At this point, you will be experiencing a total change of weather and temperature conditions. It is important to rest well here.
Day 5: Experience Barafu Camp
At the crack of dawn, you will have an energy giving cup of coffee. This is followed by a hike to Barafu camp. This point marks the conclusion of the southern circuit. When you arrive, you will see many amazing attractions. The term Barafu is a Swahili word meaning “ice.” The camp offers all around captivating scenery because of its high location. You will enter the camp and enjoy dinner. After eating, you will go to bed very early to get ready for the journey to the summit, which starts at midnight.
Day 6: From Barafu Camp to Uhuru Summit and Mweka Hut
This will be the day that you make history. You will reach the summit of the highest stand alone mountain on earth. You will also be among the few successful hikers to complete the 7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Hike via Machame Route. The journey starts at midnight after an energy giving tea. You will hike for about 5 to 6 hours in the dark.
You will make good use of your torches as you walk through the glaciers. The hike is challenging physically and emotionally. These moments create amazing stories for hikers to tell later. You will seek to rest at Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. This is where the captivating sunrise rays meet your eyes. You will see the light hitting the snow in a beautiful way.
Thereafter, one more hour will be needed to reach the snowcapped Uhuru peak. This is the tallest point in Africa. You will spend a few hours celebrating your success and taking photos. After the celebration, you will begin descending to Mweka hut for your meals and sleep.
Day 7: Mweka Gate and Departure
Early in the morning, you will have breakfast while saying goodbye to your friends. You will then descend to Mweka gate to receive your golden hiking certificate.
