Day 1: Flight Addis Ababa – Dire Dawa
Fly from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa with Ethiopian Airlines. Upon arrival, visit the active Kefira market. Next, explore the largest chat market in Harar, where the mildly narcotic leaf is sold.
Wander through the sixteenth-century walled city of Harar, the fourth-largest city in the Islamic world.
It feels like time has stopped here. Your tour includes visits to the National and Harari museums, the home of Haile Selassie’s father Ras Mekonnen, and the house of the French poet Arthur Rimbaud, who lived in Harar as a “gun-runner” in the 19th century.
You will also see traditional Harari homes, the busy Islamic market, and other interesting places. At sunset, watch the “hyena man” feed wild hyenas outside Harar’s walls.
This old custom keeps the hyenas from scavenging food and animals inside the town. Visitors are welcome to feed the hyenas too.
Day 2: Explore Babile and the Valley of Marvels
With your experienced guide, drive to Babile and the Valley of Marvels. The Valley is famous for its symmetrical rock formations and beautiful views. Your guide will explain the local geology as you take easy hikes there.
Next, visit Babile town, known for its large market on Saturdays and camel markets on Mondays and Thursdays. You will have time to explore the hidden corners of this charming town. At the end of the day, return to your hotel.
Day 3: Discover the Amazing Town of Dire Dawa
Spend your last day in Ethiopia on a guided tour of Dire Dawa. Visit the famous French-built train station in this historic colonial city. You will return to the Kefira market, the oldest market in town, and can also visit other markets during the day.
Walk around the stalls to enjoy the sights, smells, and find authentic gifts or tasty food. You may explore the neighborhoods of Megaala and Kezira as well.
Later, you will be driven to the airport for your flight home. Though you are leaving, your memories of Ethiopia will last a lifetime.
