2 Days to Calandula Falls – Calandula Falls is located on the Lucala River and is one of the highest waterfalls in Africa, with a drop of 101 meters. While waterfalls outside Angola are not yet famous, this one is among the most impressive in the country.
Unlike more popular waterfalls like Victoria Falls, Calandula is still peaceful and quiet. Far from busy tourist areas, you can often enjoy the view alone. This is a place where you can truly feel connected to Africa.
Malanje Province has many things to see. The “Black Rocks” of Pedras Negras are a mysterious site with an important history. It was once a place of resistance against Portuguese rule. Angola is considered one of the top three countries in Africa with rich wildlife and plant life.
This is especially true in Malanje. The mix of tropical plants and rare animals makes it one of the most beautiful areas in the country. Visiting this place gives you a real taste of the Angolan forest.
Day 1: Travel to Malanje & Visit Calandula Falls
We drive east from Luanda toward the inland region of Malanje. Along the way, we stop in the small town of Ndalatando. Here, you will visit the local botanical gardens to see some of Angola’s natural plants and flowers. After a local lunch, we continue our journey to the peaceful Calandula Falls.
There will be time to stop along the way to take photos. Once we arrive at Calandula, if the weather is clear, we will see the falls from two sides. First, we enjoy a wide view from the top, then we head down to see them from below. After this visit, we take a short drive back to the hotel for dinner and rest.
Day 2: Explore Pedras Negras & Return to Luanda
We wake up early for another view of the falls and to enjoy the surrounding area. Then we continue to Pedras Negras. On the way, we pass through a small town called Cacuso. If you like, we can stop to visit and see what daily life is like there. It is close to the town of Malanje.
The Black Rocks are known for their role in Angola’s history. They were the site of a local rebellion against the Portuguese. Queen Rainha Ginga ruled Angola during that time. Many local stories are connected to this area. After the visit, we drive back to Luanda, have a late lunch, and drop you off at your hotel or the airport.
